Odense Zoo innovation project 1 year on
A year ago, Odense Zoo (Europe’s Best Zoo in the heart of Denmark) came to Happen looking to develop a growth strategy. We were tasked to work with the fixed asset of the zoo and its grounds and to develop innovation concepts which would drive more visitors more regularly and get them to spend more while on site.
After just 24-hours immersed in the zoo, we knew the focus shouldn’t be on the animals but on uncovering visitor needs. What we found was that visitors weren’t looking for more exciting animal exhibits; they were using the zoo as a vehicle to enjoy family time together. This meant the zoo needed to cater for all generational needs and family dynamics; from engaging play parks to fun water areas and open picnic spaces.
In just 48-hours, our team worked alongside the zoo team and developed a pipeline of commercial innovations, using the zoo’s existing assets to give visitors the best experience on the basis of the animals and their surroundings and helping families create lasting memories in the zoo.
Just 12 months later, Odense Zoo has implemented many of our innovation concepts to enhance the visitor experience, including a fantastic animal-themed art entrance, a water play area and the star attraction; Chunga the lion playground! All children from Funen Island have played in this playground, and a quarter of family time in the zoo is spent here, so it was in much need of a creative uplift. Chunga was unveiled to delighted visitors in May on the zoo’s 86th birthday!
