Top flavour trends from London Cocktail Week 2015
Last week we spotted the latest food to go trends from the 2015 Lunch! Show, this week we hit London Cocktail Week to sample the latest alcohol flavour trends.
Backing up what we saw during the Lunch! Show, we noticed several BIG flavour trends that look set to stick around in the alcohol and cocktail world:
As we know, we had a great Rhubarb harvest this year, and we saw this everywhere from cocktail flavours to infused spirits.
2. Hot and Spicy
As with food, we saw many manifestations of hot and spicy – in the form of Chipotle, Red Pepper, Mustard, Jalapeno and Marsala.
3. Coconut, coconut, coconut
Not just water or milk, but this has expanded into jelly form too!
4. Flavour Combos – Alcohol meets Food
Ham and Mustard Gin (Sipsmith).
Bacon Old Fashioned.
5. Seasonal Ingredients
We saw beetroot, apple, passion fruit and corn flavours, which are in season right now.
6. Beer Cocktails
A whole stand dedicated to beer cocktails from Peroni and 46 & Mercy, plus other beer cocktail offerings such as Beer Caipirinha.
7. Tea, Matcha & Health
Tea is very present in cocktails and we saw the first signs of matcha as a key ingredient. We can see that there is a trend breaking through of health meeting alcohol – they are no longer mutually exclusive.
Following on from that, there are now more Alcohol-Free cocktails that we have ever seen before. Like Gluten in the food world, we now have menus dedicated to virgin cocktails (not just the same cocktails without the alcohol, but specifically crafted recipes)
Visiting London cocktail week demonstrated how consumers are now looking to experience alcohol with more than just their taste buds. We stepped into the world of Smith & Sinclair to taste, smell and absorb gin at the same time. We’ve seen this earlier this year with Alcoholic Architecture from Bompass and Parr. Watch this space for the evolution of alcohol product innovation encompassing all the senses!
